Catered Luncheons for Canallers

Served Daily on Mary Jemison and Sam Patch Public Cruises
Noon - 1:15pm

Sandwiches provided a popular convenience food for canal laborers and other active workers. 1800s sandwiches generally consisted of one or two thin slices of meat, sometimes with cheese, enclosed in two pieces of buttered bread, and served flat on a plate, or rolled. Some ate sandwiches in a cold, sliced biscuit. By the end of the century, sandwiches had become a popular light repast for luncheons, suppers, teas, and picnics. Salads of field greens also enjoyed popularity in the canal era.

Lorraine's Food Factory and Corn Hill Navigation have embellished these traditions to offer the following "Catered Lunches for Canallers" selections served onboard Sam Patch and Mary Jemison.

When the Erie Canal came through the Rochester region in the 1820s, it conveyed thousands of people and loads of sought-after manufactured goods from the East. The canal also brought fashionable foods from the Eastern Seaboard as well as other parts of the world. Oysters were among the first delicacies to reach Rochester via canal boats from New York City!

An 1836 Erie Canal traveler described the sumptuous dinners served onboard canal passenger boats: "At meal times... the table is set the whole length of the boat, the table is supplied with everything that is necessary and of the best quality with many of the luxuries of life."

Drawing from this heritage, Corn Hill Navigation is proud to collaborate with outstanding Rochester restaurateur and "caterer to the stars," Lorraine's, to offer exceptional onboard dining experiences. Our menus blend the finest products of regional farms with popular national and international cuisine.
