Fishing is a sport for the majority of people today, apart from choosing fishing rods and fishing equipment, selecting fishing lines is also an issue for many people.
Fishing is a hobby, a common entertainment ò many people after any busy working day. However, if you want to be effective in fishing, you need to have experience with important fishing gear. Not only fishing rods and fishing machines, but also the fishing line is the most important factor for starting a fishing trip.
Most amateur anglers would use Mono when choosing a fishing line, since they are the cheapest line. If you tighten your spending, it is the best choice. However, to increase the success of fishing, you need to use the right line.
There are only two valid uses for fishing lines: to prevent the fish from seeing and how to use the lines effectively for your purpose.
Holding a fishing line in hand, reading some brief information in English written on it, many people don’t know the features, uses, advantages, and disadvantages of the type of string contained in the box which are fully displayed in just a few words: Nylon Monofilament, Nylon-Copolymer, Spectra 4 Braid, Dyneema 8 braid, Fluorocarbon Line, Fluorocarbon Leader.
Nylon Monofilament, the name says it all
In 1938, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (referred to as DuPont), an American company announced the discovery of Nylon, a new synthetic super polymer group, which could be applied in the textile industry.
Nylon fibers are said to be stronger, have better elasticity than traditional fibers like cotton (cotton), silk, wool, or man-made silk. A year later, in 1939, DuPont started producing Nylon Monofilament fishing lines. Before Nylon, Dacron braids were the most popular fishing line.
People have to use Dacron fishing line, although the knots of this type are not tight, the wear resistance is weak and it is less elastic. So when nylon was invented, it was really a revolution.
However, despite their efforts, Dupont did not make this type of line as popular as expected. Until 1958, with the introduction of the Stren line, Duponts Nylon Monofilament was widely recognized.
Compared to Mono strings of nearly 20 years ago, Stren is thinner, more uniform in quality, can be used with many different machines including spinning and spin-casting machines at that time. Stren then quickly became popular in sport fishing because it made fishing easier.
True to its name, Monofilament has only one component, formed through the pressing process, in which molten plastics is made into yarn by a spinning mold. The process is relatively inexpensive, so the cost of Monofilament is also quite low. It is also one of the main reasons why it is so popular.
For decades, with many fishing lovers around the world, Monofilament has remained the dominant line in their fun. The line has also improved many things such as adding more coatings, innovating the way of production. Modern Monofilament line is more supple, stronger, wear-resistant, thinner, softer, drooping, more sensitive, and has more attractive colors.
But like many lines, they have their pros and cons. In addition to the advantage of having a relatively cheap price, easy toss, easy to cut, easy to tie … the Mono tends to stretch when jerking the fish. If the jaw of the fish is hard, this will be a big problem. The sensitivity of this line is also low, it is difficult to detect small impacts.
In its development history, Monofilament has maintained its popularity, accounting for more than two-thirds of the fishing lines that have always been subjected to intense shifts in the fishing tool manufacturing industry.
Many Mono strings today are as expensive as those with complex components requiring special materials and other sophisticated manufacturing techniques.
Users who buy Mono lines no longer focus on the price factor, instead, they have more requirements to fit better. It is important to remember that low-cost monofilament brands do not pay as much attention to the quality control and finishing processes as high-end Monofilament products.
As a result, they do not have high tensile strength, toughness, abrasion resistance, and knotting capabilities. They are also weaker than expensive monofilaments. You get what you pay for! If you prefer to use monofilament, choose brands that have a long-standing reputation in the market.
Braid Fishing Line, there are cheap, there are expensive, choose which?
Many European and American fishers call braid line a super-durable line or a microfilament. The first call is based on the special ability of the braid.
It can be said that the braid line (braided line) is one of the great inventions of mankind. To reach 60lb (PE3, diameter of 0.285mm), the nylon mono line must have a diameter of 0.70mm; What a clear comparison! The diameter is extremely small, but it has great traction and can be used to fish from the shore.
A lot of fishers have achieved the ability to toss with braids far beyond what they have ever done with mono strings. Thanks to the small diameter and thin line, the braid is less resistant to water, the prey sinks deeper, the rope is not elastic (less stretch than mono wire to 30%) so the fisherman can detect very small touches from prey side.
Why say braid line has both expensive and cheap types?
Partly because of the material. If you see that the main component of the braid is polyester, this string will be very cheap. The line is also very strong, not elastic and the line diameter is too large, it is difficult to toss.
PE braid cord is a high-grade braided line, which has a high price. It is called PE because it is braided from high-density Poly-Ethylene fibers. If your cable box only has “Dyneema” or “Spectra” on it, don’t worry because it is still a high-class PE wire. Spectra and Dyneema are both made from polyethylene gel-spun.
Dyneema yarn is manufactured by the Dutch company – Royal DSM, while Spectra is made by Honeywell International, an American company. Both are made from super-molecular Poly-Ethylene, an extremely durable, flexible material in the form of fibers.
Tensile strength is equivalent to the strongest steel. There is also a difference between Spectra and Dyneema: Spectra is three times larger than Dyneema and therefore, it has better abrasion resistance. About the most popular fishing line brands today: Varivas PE braid is made from Spectra yarn; YGK is made from Dyneema.
At a slightly lower price, we have Power Pro made from Spectra; Berkley from Dyneema. Or like Ocea EX8, the braid fishing line which is said to be the strongest in the history of braid line, also made from Dyneema. The price of PE of these brands is very high, which does not mean that making Poly-Ethylene yarn itself will be expensive.
Threads are part of an extremely complex manufacturing formula that includes design, quality control, protective coatings, additional materials, braiding techniques, and other features. These are the basis for determining the quality and the cost of the fishing line.
A PE coil, in addition to the filament type (or PE or Spectra / Deenamy), on the package also shows the number of strands of braided yarn. For example PE 4X, 8X, or Spectra 4. PE 4X means PE line with 4 single strands braided into 1 strand. Similarly, 8X means 8 stranded line. Is there any kind of 1 strand or 3 strands? Yes. Un braided PE braid (single strand) made from Spectra, usually covered with a thick layer.
The smooth surface of the line is a great advantage. The bonding of the silk threads in the material makes the strings very strong like mono fishing lines and very easy to use. The single type is stronger than mono fishing line but lower than the conventional braid. The line is also quite durable and easy to toss, recommended for baitcasting only, not spinning machines.
3-strand single strands are usually flat, rough, rougher, and are more prone to wind knots than a 4-strand cord. The line is also not very expensive. Single-stranded 4 strand braid has a square shape (big width) but because it is quite thin, it looks round. The surface is rough, so when retracting, it usually makes a lot of noise.
The smoothest 8-strand PE braid is often favored by lure or jigging fishery. They are also the most expensive of all. The smoothness of the string is very important because the string is always in contact with the ring at high tension, especially in jigging.
Because PE fibers have poor abrasion resistance, most are covered with a protective layer. Coating makes the line stronger, more solid, and more slender. The thinner the cord body, the less resistance to wind and water resistance.
The coarser and harder the line is, the more likely it is to friction with the eyelets when tossing the bait, resulting in not going far away. In essence, PE fibers do not create marks on the wire-containing tubes, so it will not peel off the coating of the machine, but the thick coating will create marks on the wires.
Thin or uncoated cords help to throw very far but require special care to avoid tangles or wind knots. However, fixing tangles in these types of fishing lines is quite easy: just use the extra mono fishing line(or Fluoro), take advantage of the abrasion resistance at the top of the line without having to use that ability in the trunk line. High-class thin or uncoated Japanese lines are very popular because they support far throw and smooth, gentle retraction.
In this regard, each brand has its own secret in the coating, such as the Berkley Fireline and Spiderwire fusion lines with the thickest coating; Fireline looks like a single strand but it is actually braided 4 strands and then covered with a soft plastic layer.
Power Pro has a fairly thick coating, applied on individual strands (covering each strand individually and then braided), and can easily recognize individual strands in the overall string; YGK Power Hunter, WX8, and WX4 have a thin Fluoro coating and it is as soft as uncoated PE wire. Japanese famous fishing lines are often less covered. They often use the most advanced yarn and take advantage of the natural quality of the yarn to protect the string.

Copolymer fishing line
In the mid-1980s, the Copolymer fishing line was introduced and played an interesting role in the fishing world. At first glance, there is no difference between the copolymer and the standard monofilament, their structure is similar – just a long nylon thread for fishing lines – but due to a mix of different nylon polymers, along with refining in the manufacturing process, basically, Copolymer is said to be much more useful than Monofilament in the features: smaller diameter, better wear resistance, less stretch, higher durability, higher impact resistance and greater shock resistance.
Copolymer versus monofilament cord
One of the advantages of Copolymer over monofilament is strength. This allows it to be made smaller than mono wires in the same load. Those who do not like to use braid can use Copolymer instead, especially in Crankbait fishing techniques to catch big fish.
Although stronger than most monofilament strings, they still perform great tasks that are the strength of monofilament such as appropriate expansion to prevent breaking when encountering large fish.
Copolymer strings are a bit harder than monofilament, so it is more sensitive, detecting very soft touches. Copolymer is also less entangled, so the fisherman can waste less time. Copolymer strings have a refractive index quite similar to water, helping them to camouflage well within the fishs view.
Copolymer line is submerged while monofilament tends to float on the surface of the water, so if you like submerged fishing, you should choose Copolymer. Copolymer line is also more water-resistant than monofilament and will not lose strength or absorb water.
YGKs ADMIX, a new type of copolymer
ADMIX is a line of copolymer wire with high abrasion resistance of YGK Japan. The company has been very successful in bringing DMV Nylon to Copolymer wire, a special material that helps the line to be extremely resistant to abrasion, the visibility of domestic wire is low without losing strength.

Forms of fishing line use
To understand why you need to choose the right fishing line, you must know what kind of bait show for your bait.
a. Upper area: when the bait is being used on the waters upper layer, youll use a fishing line that floats above the water and isnt too visible. However, picking any kind however depends on the waters limpidity because of fishing style.
b. Middle area: the baits such as Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, and Swimbaits are used while fishing in this area. Choosing the right fishing line requires some technique, because it depends on the limpidity of the water and the baits you use.
c. Bottom water: Normally, fishing in this area uses plastic baits or Jig, so you should use the lines that are less visible, sensitive and low-load.
Common types of fishing lines
Monofilament (Mono line)
Mono lines are simple loops, typically in several different sizes. Relative stamina and sometimes with less visible cable.
Mono is a floating wire style, so its ideal for use with Topwater Baits. If you fish in waters full of weeds or lilly leaves, however, the plants can cut off the lines. And it is a safe idea to use a twine instead while fishing in areas with lots of lily leaves.
This kind of rope is nice but when you use it, it also appears to cause tangling.
Mono ropes can also be used for middle floor fishing when a lightweight, floating string is needed. Stretching allows you to capture fish, as it helps the sea bass not to throw prey as the fish hops.
You can also use Mono to weight bait for bottom fishing. Floating fishing lines will help lift the bait up to the position you want from the bottom of the water.

Copolymer (Super line)
Copolymer is one of the nylon lines that is casted simplest and most durable. It is easy to use with a horizontal fishing line. It can still be used with vertical fishing machines, but only if you want to find a soft line. Copolymer is an upgraded version of Monofilament, but it is much better than the Mono line.
This line is more difficult to see than the Mono line, and is less extended than the Fluorocarbon chain, less extended than the braid. This makes Copolymer more vulnerable than twine.
Similar to twine, the diameter of the wire is half that of Mono line, and it is submerged. The copolymer wire is especially more resistant to abrasion than braided line and fluorocarbon line.
Copolymer is used with a lot of purposes. It has the advantages of Mono and Fluoro line, and is as flexible and less stretchy as braids.
This type of fishing line is used for performances of all kinds but is still used on the middle floor.
The ability to tie is stronger than the Fluorocarbon line.

- Rare in the country
- Is worn out less than Fluoro, so its more supple.
- Using horizontal fishing machines is best (can use vertical fishing machines, too).
Fluorocarbons (invisible line)
The best cord inside the water is barely visible. It is still stretched but not as much as Mono string but more stretched than Copolymer thread. Tapping string is better than Mono, so its getting overloaded. This string is more receptive than the Mono string, thereby making the bait feel better.
Fluoro wire does have many weaknesses, however. Its resistance to wear is not equal to Mono wires. Using them on the surface is not a good idea, though. Especially when you fish around logs and rocks.
The line is best used for mid- and bottom-floor fishing. It is suitable for high skill fishing and using worms or jig baits. Better to fish with Crankbait bait. Knot straps are not as good as Mono straps but the use of Clinch Knot knots is more effective.
- Best for use in middle and bottom layers while fishing.
- Usage in shallow waters.
- Sensitivity higher than Mono strings makes you feel the bait well.
- In the area, the strings are less noticeable than Mono.

Braid (braided fishing line)
Braided wire is a type of semi-submergent (slowly sinking) wire. Its non-stretching and highly sensitive, so it helps make the bait feel good.
Extremely high strength and extremely good pitching despite its small diameter. 20-40 yards farther than Mono and Fluoro, wires may be thrown.
Easy to see in mud, so its easy to spot fish. However, it is still very powerful to use in dark waters, little light or fishing in the grass at the upper level.
Twine is recommended for use in areas with overgrown groves while fishing upstairs and trimming in.
- Best used for upstairs fishing or rowing in areas where luxuriant groves are located.
- Best applied to turbid waters.
- Sensitivity extremely high.
- Best used when fishing on a floor and freeing wires with vertical and horizontal fishing machines.
